What is a variable?
A letter representing a number that can change or is unknown (x, y, n, t).
What is a constant?
A plain number whose value never changes, like 7, -3, 1/2, or π.
How do you split an expression into terms?
Chop it at the + and − signs, carrying each sign with its term. In 5x² − 3x + 8 the terms are 5x², −3x, and +8.
Expression vs. equation?
An expression has no equals sign and is simplified or evaluated; an equation has an equals sign and is solved.
What is the coefficient of x? Of −y? Of x/4?
1, −1, and 1/4 (dividing by 4 = multiplying by one-fourth).
When are two terms 'like terms'?
When they have exactly the same variables raised to exactly the same powers; only coefficients may differ.
Are 3ab and −8ba like terms?
Yes — order of multiplication doesn't matter, so they combine to −5ab.
Evaluate 2x² − 5x + 1 at x = −3.
2(9) + 15 + 1 = 34. Always substitute with parentheses to avoid sign errors.
Simplify 2(x + 5) + 3x.
Distribute: 2x + 10 + 3x = 5x + 10.
A gym charges $40 signup plus $25 per month. Expression for m months?
40 + 25m — 25 is the rate (multiplies the variable), 40 is the one-time constant.
